THE BRIEF

Use animation as a dynamic medium to challenge young people to interpret objects

THE OUTPUT

Working with Chocolate Films, four short films investigating four objects from the Jewish Museum London’s exquisite collection were created. Each film explores a different aspect of the richness of Jewish heritage.

The Animated Museum enabled the audience to create as well as consume knowledge. Using artefacts as springboards for deeper enquiry, the young people took creative control and produced their own response.

As part of the Learning Team’s Holocaust Legacy Project, create a series of films capturing the experience of meeting a Kindertransport refugee for the Museum’s award-winning school programme.

THE OUTPUT

Six testimony films capturing the story of life before the war, the rise of Nazism, Kristallnacht, being a refugee, liberation and family. 24 question and answer films exploring four themes: Human Rights and Legacy; Relationships and Feelings; Memory; Identity and Faith. A set of portraits of the Kinder (child refugees).

An innovative outreach learning resource for students to explore British Jewish life, culture and heritage.

THE OUTPUT

A museum on wheels comprising three separate loan boxes linking to short films and supported by teachers’ notes.

A curriculum-rich resource seeking to develop students’ knowledge of Judaism as a living faith. Packed with objects each loan box offers opportunities to make connections through a handling collection. Multi-sensory and appealing to a range of learning styles and abilities Connected Learning creates inspiring experiences that spark curiosity and creative thinking.

[Connected Learning] has had an impact on attitudes to learning in pupils, knowledge of the subject for pupils and staff, confidence in teaching, improvements to teaching planning and practice, and in exceptional cases - strengthened relationships between schools, families and the local community. THE CLIENT

Islington Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service team were keen to find opportunities to actively engage young people in school to openly discuss mental health.

THE BRIEF

Building personal resilience, improving lives and empowering young people to manage stress and anxiety

THE OUTPUT

Working with past service users, the group explored ideas and together co-produced a practical toolkit enabling young people to talk about, and destigmatise, mental health issues using every day, familiar objects.

Playing a dual role, The Big Box of Stress Relief, facilitates conversation between young people whilst supporting teachers to explore ways to support young people and their families.

THE BRIEF

Linking to Mishcon de Reya’s mission and values, explore themes of curiosity and innovation

THE OUTPUT

Taking inspiration from Tim Harford’s book Fifty Things That Made the Modern Economy, five objects were selected as triggers for exploring key innovations that have shaped our modern economy.

Three elements were developed. Objects boxes to spark curiosity. Talking tables with expert facilitators were hosted during an informal staff social event. In Conversation with Tim Harford lunchtime event hosted by Mishcon Academy.

Intergenerational participatory arts project with LEAP London. Part of Brent Borough of Culture 2020

The Output

Working with participatory artists, Home Is Where the Art Is, brings together people living with early stage dementia and primary school students to creatively explore questions of identity and place.

Home Is Where the Art Is is due to complete mid-March 2020.

USING THINKING ROUTINES

Have you ever wanted to learn how to slow down and look at a piece of art, an object or a photograph taking time to notice details and make connections?

Developed and designed at Project Zero, Harvard, Visible Thinking is a broad and flexible framework for enriching learning. Central to Visible Thinking are Thinking Routines: practices that help to make thinking visible. Visible Thinking aims to provoke and challenge perceptions acting as catalysts to deeper conversations and thinking, encouraging and promoting curiosity.

The Art of Slowing Down inspires a sense of discovery, encourages fresh perspectives whilst creating a shared, inclusive experience.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Anyone who is curious, interested in collaborative approaches to team building or wants to find a new way of approaching the familiar or unfamiliar.

The Brief

Curate a week long programme of learning, exhibitions and talks to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2020

Project Partners

South Hampstead Synagogue, National Holocaust Centre and Museum, Association of Jewish Refugees, 45 Aid Society, Remembering Srebrenica

The Output

Over 650 primary and secondary students visiting South Hampstead Synagogue and participating in expertly facilitated award-winning NHCM workshops.

Opening ceremony with Holocaust survivor, Lili Pohlmann in conversation with Safet Vukalic who fled Bosnia. Closing ceremony with Dr Stephen Smith OBE, co-founder of National Holocaust Centre and Museum, in conversation with Rabbi Shlomo Levin.

Exhibitions on display included The Boys Memory Quilts, The Forever Project and The Eye as Witness.

The Output: Before expanding the Community Programme, Caroline Marcus Associates supported the Learning Team to explore its overarching aims and purpose. The resulting report helped to define the team’s scope and strategy.

THE CLIENT

World Jewish Relief, Specialist Training and Employment Project (STEP)

THE BRIEF

Use a museum collection to support integration, wellbeing and improve employment opportunities for refugees in the UK.

THE OUTPUT

Together with Wakefield Museum a series of five workshops was developed exploring the industrial history and heritage of the local area.

Working with refugees, mostly Syrian, resettled in the UK under the Government Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme the Museum’s handling collection provided a framework to uncover how Wakefield worked, and continues to work. This in turn supported the group to speak English, get to know local people’s working lives and traditions whilst becoming familiar with the Museum and the opportunities it offers.

The Client

Leicestershire County Council Heritage and Museums Service

The Brief

Working in association with Caroline Marcus Associates, we were invited to create a continuing professional development workshop exploring learning issues, developments and initiatives across the wider heritage landscape.

The Output

A half day participatory workshop inspiring discussion and debate for 20 professionals including senior management, learning and interpretation managers and volunteers. Case studies showcasing digital, physical, outreach and on-site initiatives were share with staff to inform LCC’s post Covid 19 learning programme.

‘Tali and Caroline have articulated very well the priorities for the museum sector nationally, how the pandemic has affected the landscape and brought about change, and how these national priorities may be addressed at a local level. This has helped to inform and inspire the reshaping of our learning programme within Leicestershire Heritage and Museums Service. Project: Caroline Marcus Associates (CMA) supported Kids in Museums to deliver the training and consultancy strand of the Resilient Heritage Project. CMA developed KiM’s training and consultancy offer in response to sector needs, organisational aims with a view to raising revenue and building resilience.

The Output: A user-friendly three-year training and consultancy strategy outlining a project plan, planning templates, timeframe, cost projections and recommendations.

British Museum: National Programmes Conference 2019

Exploring equality and diversity in museum practice across the UK

This presentation discussed the context of this project, methodology for the heritage engagement and challenges encountered along the way. Project outcomes, intentional and unexpected, were shared with participants.

GEM Conference 2019: Connection, Action, Innovation

The GEM annual conference is the landmark CPD event of the year for heritage learning in the UK. Through a combination of inspiring keynotes and practical sessions, GEM conference provides delegates with new ideas, original solutions and strengthened networks. Building a participatory space, by Gemmers, for Gemmers, uncovering new pathways and shining a spotlight on best practice and cutting-edge developments.

‘One workshop I found particularly inspiring was the breakout session on Friday morning. The session was run by Esther Graham from Wakefield Museums and Castles and Tali Krikler a Learning and Participation Consultant. In the workshop they talk about the challenges of developing heritage engagement to support the integration of a group of Syrian refugees. They demonstrated how challenging assumptions and using heritage as a foundation enabled them to make some unexpected connections. It was truly uplifting to hear about the project, the unexpected connections and the positive outcomes that can be achieved from working together and using what you have.’
